TAX LAW CHANGES STARTING IN 2026 AFFECT CHARITABLE DONATIONS

A change to the tax laws starting in 2026 will provide benefits for taxpayers who normally use the standard deduction. This change will also benefit IRS registered charitable organizations such as this Education Trust. Under the previous law charitable deductions were included as a part of the itemized deductions on Schedule A of Form 1040. For many taxpayers the sum of all the deductible items (medical, property/income taxes, home mortgage interest, charitable donations, deductible losses, and some miscellanous deductions) did not exceed the standard deduction and therefore were not deductible.

Under the new law taxpayers can use the standard deduction and deduct charitible contributions to a limited extent as follows: Single taxpayers can deduct up to $1,000.00 in addition to the standard deduction, Married couples filing jointly can deduct up to $2,000.00 in addition to the standard deduction.

Those who wish to make charitable deductions greater than the above limitations can still do so, but they must itemize deductions on Schedule A and exceed the standard deduction in order to be deductible.

Due to the cost of registration and/or reporting requirements by some states, the Trust will only accept donations from persons or entities domiciled in those states that provide registration exemptions within certain limits or do not require any registration.

Donations will be accepted only from persons or entities domiciled in the states listed below. Furthermore, the exemptions by most of these states limit total donations from all sources to $25,000 in any calendar year; therefore, once the Trust reaches $25,000 in donations in any calendar year, donations will not be accepted for the remainder of the year.
